Vic: Security on underground rail adequate- Bracks

Premier STEVE BRACKS says security on Melbourne's underground rail system is adequate
.. despite an incident early today in which a ticket evader carrying a backpack ran into
one of the tunnels.

The man jumped from the platform at Melbourne Central railway station about 7 am (AEST)
.. entering a tunnel leading to Flagstaff station .. less than a kilometre away.

Trains were halted for a short time in the tunnel .. which serves the Epping and Hurstbridge
rail lines .. as inspectors and police searched for the man.

But he was later seen leaving the tunnel at Flagstaff station .. where he again evaded security.

The premier says security on the underground rail system is adequate .. and passengers
weren't in danger.

The city loop's security arrangements underwent an overhaul last year in the wake of
the London underground bombings .. and as part of preparations for the Melbourne Commonwealth
Games in March.

Victoria Police say the man who sparked the security scare was on the run from ticket inspectors.
