FED: Tasmanian performance could determine feds fate; Howard
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD will deliver the keynote address to the Tasmanian Liberalstate conference today, after telling the party it needs to win lower house seats.
Mr HOWARD says the performance of the Tasmanian Liberals in the next federal electioncould help determine the fate of the coalition government.
Addressing a state Liberal council dinner in at Smithton, in Tasmania's north-west,last night Mr HOWARD said the party holds no state seats in the lower house.
He says the coalition doesn't have a big majority in the federal parliament and thereonly needs to be a swing of 1.9 per cent nationally for it to lose office.
He says it can't be assumed that the federal government's above average performancein New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia will continue.
Mr HOWARD has urged the state Liberals to find lower house candidates that can win.
