NSW: Report frinds mental health services in crisis
A major report card on Australia's mental health system has found services are in crisisand underfunded by world standards.
The national study by the charity SANE has been launched by founding member ANNE DEVESON,whose son took his life after a seven-year battle with schizophrenia.
She says even though Australia is "enquiried-out" on mental health, patients, theirfamilies and carers are still missing out on adequate treatment, support and rehabilitation.
The SANE report calls for a new mental health plan and a hike in the mental healthcomponent of the federal health budget from 6.5 per cent to 10 per cent.
SANE says this increase would bring Australia into line with the UK but behind Canadaand New Zealand, both on 11 per cent.
Meanwhile a sufferer of mental illness, identified as CHARLES, has told the launchthe system itself is mentally ill by clinical definition -- because it's delusional, disorganised, incoherent and rather negative to say the least.
