Vic: Five taken to hospital as three trams crash

Five people have been taken to hospital after a crash involving three trams in busy
St Kilda Rd in Melbourne's inner city.

A spokesman for Swanston (PRON: SWAN-sn) trams says three other people have been treated
for minor injuries in peak-hour traffic outside the National Gallery of Victoria.

He says the crash occurred when the last tram in a line of three hit the tram in front
of it, causing that tram to hit the first tram in line.

He says none of the trams was turning or stopped at lights and it's still unclear how
the collision happened.

A full investigation will be held.

The spokesman says the collision halted trams in both directions for one hour this afternoon.

A spokesman for Metropolitan Ambulance Service says the five injured have been taken
to the Alfred Hospital.

One has serious injuries but none are in a critical condition.
